Understanding The Role Of Automotive Filters In Your Vehicle

Automobile filters are a big part of keeping your car running properly and protecting various parts of the vehicle. Filters are used in varying systems in your car or truck, and keeping them clean or changing them when necessary will help ensure your vehicle runs and drives the way it should.

Oil Filter

One of the automobile filters most people are familiar with is the engine oil filter. The oil filter's job is to filter small particles of metal, dirt, and debris out of the engine oil as you drive. The oil lubricates the bearings and journals inside the engine, and even small particles in the oil can scratch these surfaces and result in early failure of the bearings. The result is a connecting rod, crankshaft, or camshaft bearing failure that can be catastrophic for the engine.

The oil filter needs changing every time the oil is changed, and any parts store that sells automobile filters can help you select the right one for your vehicle.

Transmission Filters

If you drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission, there are automobile filters for these. The transmission filter is located inside the transmission oil pan on most cars and trucks and is often challenging to service. Fortunately, the transmission filter has a much longer life span and maintenance interval than most of the filters in the vehicle. A transmission service tech or repair shop can service this filter for you, but check your owner's manual to determine when the manufacturer suggests you replace it.

Fuel Filters

The fuel filter on your car is another essential automobile filter that needs changing from time to time. The fuel filter is responsible for removing dirt particles or contaminants from the fuel system and keeping them from causing issues inside the carburetor or fuel injection system. Often the smallest particles of dirt in the fuel line can cause a fuel injector to stop working or plug up the jets inside the carburetor on older cars and trucks. Changing the fuel filter can be challenging because it is often under the car or inside the fuel tank. However, any repair shop can help you deal with the fuel filter if you suspect a problem with the one in your car.

Air Filters

Out of all the filters in your car, the engine air filter is the simplest to manage. The filter traps dirt, dust, pollen, and other materials so they do not get into the engine through your air intake. These filters are often under the hood in a box that is easily accessible, and many do not require tools to replace them. The air filter for your car is typically an off-the-shelf item at the auto parts store, and you should change it according to the manufactures recommendations.
